It uses a single winding, connects it in a different way to alter the number of poles. Changing the connections changes the number of poles in the motor, changing the speed and HP. The first one is a 6 lead, single voltage, 2 Spd, 2HP ratings. The motors designs and connections are different. What don't I understand about two speed motors or just this one in particular?įeel pretty stupid now for possibly killing an expensive new motor with such a simple mistake, thankfully I didn't pay much for it and it may still be OK. How is this motor wired internally that 3 leads aren't used for low speed? The drawing was confusing to me, and I thought all the wires would be used in either configuration, with the sets of 4 poles either in parallel as a 4 pole motor or separated as an 8 pole. Really though the lines should only be connected to 1, 2, and 3, with 4, 5, and 6 connected to nothing. The error was I thought for low speed the lines were connected to 1-4, 2-5, and 3-6. In the end it still runs either slow or fast when wired correctly on 3 phase, so I might not have ruined it. It wouldn't start, later figured a 20A fuse was blown so it was only getting single phase. Unplugged it real quick, tried wiring it for high speed because it's real clear how those connections go.

I tried it out last night on low speed first and I was confused about the diagram and wired it wrong, it started nice and ran for a minute before some magic smoke slipped out, still running. I'm curious how the windings are connected to allow this in this particular motor? Two speed 3 phase motor, nominally 1,800 rpm and 900 rpm, which would run as 4 poles and 8 poles if I'm not mistaken.
